Is the Travel Rule in force in Mauritius?

Yes. Travel Rule requirements are set forth in the Virtual Asset and Initial Token Offerings Services Act 2021 (”Act”) and the Virtual Asset and Initial Token Offerings Services (Travel) Rules 2022 (”Rules”).

What is the minimum threshold for the Crypto Travel Rule in Mauritius?

Travel Rule information is required for every transaction regardless of amount.

What personally identifiable information must VASPs collect and share for the Crypto Travel Rule in Mauritius?

According to Section 19 of the Act, the originating virtual asset service provider shall ensure that all transfers of virtual assets are accompanied by originator and beneficiary information, as follows:

Virtual asset account number âś… âś…
One of the following:
  • Physical address; or
  • National Identity Card number or passport number; or
  • Customer identification number; or
  • Place of birth

Are there differences in customer PII requirements for cross-border transfers versus transfers within Mauritius?

Yes. For domestic wire transfers, the originating virtual asset service provider is only required to include the originator information specified above.
